Election Fever!
It’s that time of year again at St.Mary’s, the exciting time when school leavers have the opportunity to run for the coveted role of School President. Our School President will meet & greet important school guests such as the Lord Mayor throughout the year and will also be an important member of the student council. They will act as a student representative and communicate opinions and requests to Ms. Rice and Ms.Daly on behalf of the student body. They are supported in their role by a Vice President, this position is usually shared/rotated during the year to give the other presedential candidates the opportunity to take on the role and responsibility.
This year’s campaign was very exciting. We had 5 candidates running on the day of elections, all of whom had presented ideas around what they would like to achieve if they won the election. Candidates delivered speeches detailing these ideas in a whole-school assembly and also came to individual classes to give pupils the opportunity to ask them questions.
On the day, pupils in Whitethorn Class manned the polling station, checking polling cards and directing pupils and staff to ensure votes were completed correctly. Thankfully, they ran a tight ship and managed to foil the plans of a couple of ‘fake’ voters to uphold the integrity of the occasion.
In the afternoon, pupils gathered in the PE Hall to witness the counting of the votes. This was intense and it was a close race.
We would like to congratulate our new school President on their appointment, we know they will do a fantastic job and will be a great representative for the school. The runners-up will have the opportunity to act as Vice president throughout the year.
