Frequently asked questions.

  • All children need to have been diagnosed with a mild intellectual disability and have a recommendation for special school. Please see our admissions policy for further details.

  • We have a ‘Transition Day’ in June where all existing pupils move to their new classes and new entrants will come to visit and meet their classes for about an hour and a half. Parents stay for a brief talk form the principal, order uniform and have coffee and a chat. If individual students need more transition time, we try to facilitate this.

  • Yes. Our uniform is our school tracksuit. This can be ordered through the school before the Summer.

  • Our school hours are 9.20 – 3.00. As Special schools are classified as Primary schools, even though students attend until 18, we run a primary year and finish at the end of June.

  • The application for transport goes in when you have been given a place at the school. The SENO sanctions it and it is then forwarded to CIE for them to organise routes. The school does not have anything to do with organising transport beyond submitting the paperwork and then recruiting escorts which can take some time and isn’t possible until we know what route the child is on. Schools don’t usually find out about transport until the very end of the Summer or the first day of school. There is often delays and it transport may not be completely sorted out at the beginning of term.

  • This can vary. Autism specific classes have 6 students and are staffed by 1 teacher and 3 SNAs. Our Mild I.D. classes have no more than 11 students but are more likely to have around 9 students. These classes are staffed by 1 teacher and at least 1 SNA.

  • We apply for a lunch grant and order them through Glanmore Foods. You will receive a menu to discuss with your child. This is not compulsory and students can bring their own lunches however, we are a nut free school and have a healthy eating policy.

  • We have smartboards in all classrooms as well as access to iMacs and laptops. Each class also has at least 1 iPad. Our digital involvement is progressing all the time.

We ask that pupils that have access to their own individual assistive technology aleady would bring it in to school.

  • If your child has a medical condition you will need to complete an administration of medication form to allow us to give any medication to your child. You may need a Doctor’s letter to accompany this. This will be discussed with the Principal after you have been given a place in the school.
